Have been chosen extraordinary lower reaches of the Arga and Aragon rivers as ecosystems with which to start the Iberian Riverscapes Program. It is a project that will be developed over the coming years and will aim to identify, study and promote appreciation of most sublime, unique and threatened river stages and riverine ecosystems in in our country.

Lower reaches of the Aragón River, a unique and unrepeatable landscape

Indeed, Navarra’s geography hosts one of the most original and extraordinary Iberian riverine corridors, the karst-subsidence-system of the lower reaches of Arga and Aragón rivers. It is a riverscape with a whimsical genesis that has become a dynamic and complex ecosystem as unique as threatened. The action of both rivers has transformed one of the unique sub-deserts in Europe in one of the richest and most productive alluvial floodplains in the Iberian Peninsula. This geological phenomenon of transformation has generated an original and breathtaking scenery of the riverine Iberia: La Ribera Navarra.

It is located in the western extrem of 'Las Bardenas Reales' desert, a steppes-dominated sector of the Ebro valley conformed by a massive lithological karst structure of gypsum evaporites deeply deformed by dissolution and synsedimentary subsidence (Image 3 and 4). The recent –from a geological point of view- contact of the Aragón River with these reliefs (Image 8), rapidly open therethrough a fluvial valley (delimited both sides by odd fluvial cliffs) transforming the gypseous folds of sandstones, silts and marls into rich alluvial plains (Image 10). Inside the valley, topographic depressions induced by dilution and the deposition of fluvial sediment (left by the river as a consequence of its lost of energy when it reached the low-lying plain), imposed an intense morphodynamic meandering action, still active in the recent past. Cutoff processes of meanders were extremely frequent, and thus new channels were generated and old river loops abandoned (Figure 2). As a result it became a singular hidrogeographical sector with a complex metasystem of fluvial wetlands (oxbow lakes), one of the most important in the Iberian Peninsula.

Inland wetlands of fluvial origin, unknown habitats on the edge of extinction

Nowadays, sediment dredging, big dams (hydrological regime alteration and solid flow regulation) and lateral protections have simplified the river structure and induced an accelerated incision process. As a consequence, the meandering action resulted inhibited and the oxbow lakes formation process became neutralized. Moreover, most of the old oxbow lakes became artificially isolated from the main channel and are disappearing as a result of organic accretion and fluvial sediment depositions (Figure 3 and 4).

Study and divulge of an unknown treasure

Despite this critical situation, some segments of the Aragón river still preserve riverscapes that can be consider as some of the most magnificent riverine corridors of our geography.

Moreover, pilot restoration projects focuses on incision control and naturalization of geomorphological structure and morphodynamics action are being conducted. Studies aimed to increase knowledge on the relationship between morpho-functional heterogeneity and biological diversity are being conducted as well. [Read more]

As part of its corporate commitment, MN is studing and divulging currently functioning and ecological, biological, landscape and cultural values of this ecosystem, redoubt where the best European mink (Mustela lutreola) population of Southern Europe still remains. Some studies are promoted and supported by the Government of Navarra and Gestión Ambiental de Navarra SA and also involved the Department of Hydraulic, Maritime and Environmental Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in the context of an agreement underwritten between the University and MN Consultors ^(*).

Lluciapomaresius panteli, la “somereta de Montsant”, es un singular ortóptero tetigónido cuya distribución geográfica podría encontrarse restringida a unos pocos enclaves culminales de la Sierra de Montsant (Cataluña). Se trata de un endemismo ibérico escaso que fue descrito en el año 1899 por el eminente entomólogo Longinos Navás. Tras su descubrimiento pasaría más de un siglo sin que trascendieran citas de la especie, por lo cual a finales del siglo XX se especulaba ya sobre su posible extinción. De manera inesperada, a partir del año 2000, nuevas citas de la somereta de Montsant fueron reportadas. Se planteaba así un reto contradictorio, e inusual en la naturaleza: se disponía de una segunda oportunidad para salvar a una especie de la extinción.

Pese al redescubrimiento de la especie, las citas seguían siendo escasas y muy contenidas geográficamente, poniéndose inmediatamente de manifiesto la importancia biológica que poseía la especie para el patrimonio natural ibérico y europeo. Surgía así la necesidad de establecer medidas urgentes para su protección y conservación. Tales aspectos fueron recogidos formalmente y planteados por primera vez en el Plan especial del Parque Natural de Montsant, instrumento básico que regula la ordenación y gestión de dicho espacio natural y cuya elaboración fue llevada a cabo por MN Consultores entre los años 2009 y 2012 por encargo de la Generalidad de Catalunya.

Efectivamente, la estrategia de conservación de la especie requerirá de articular medidas tanto de protección jurídica, como de gestión y conservación directa de sus poblaciones y de los hábitats de los que depende. Ambas líneas de actuación deberán partir, ineludiblemente, de un profundo conocimiento sobre la biología y la ecología de la somereta, así como sobre la distribución, demografía y estado de conservación de sus poblaciones y biotopos.

Por otro lado, MN Consultores mantiene un compromiso con los territorios en los que desarrolla y centra de manera prioritaria su actividad, proyectando y revirtiendo en estos los esfuerzos y recursos que dedica a estudios y proyectos de conservación en el ámbito de su responsabilidad social corporativa. Por ello, y ante la necesidad acuciante de disponer del conocimiento sobre el que edificar la estrategia de conservación de la somereta, MN ha adoptado el compromiso de implicarse en el impulso y desarrollo de las investigaciones que se consideran necesarias para conservar a la especie.

Para ello promoverá convenios y alianzas con administraciones e instituciones y aportará recursos y financiación desarrollando directamente algunos de dichos estudios, que se centrarán en cuestiones básicas como la descripción biométrica y genética de la especie, la determinación de su demografía y distribución geográfica, la identificación de los elementos de amenaza que la afectan, o la descripción de los aspectos esenciales de su biología (reproductiva, trófica, etc.) y de su autoecología, muy especialmente de la selección de hábitat.

Los primeros trabajos fueron ya iniciados a lo largo del 2014 y tendrán continuidad durante los próximos años. Con todo ello se pretende disponer de un diagnóstico de su estado de conservación y del de sus  hábitats, así como conocer las claves para favorecer sus poblaciones y maximizar las probabilidades de supervivencia de la especie.

Pese a ocupar una proporción muy reducida de la superficie terrestre, los ecosistemas fluviales albergan las más altas tasas de riqueza biológica (biodiversidad) imaginables y desarrollan funciones ecológicas esenciales e insustituibles de las que dependen el resto de ecosistemas y el propio desarrollo del hombre sobre la tierra. Son además extremadamente sensibles al cambio climático. Pese a todo, son en la actualidad los sistemas naturales continentales que soportan una mayor presión, en buena parte precisamente por la fuente de recursos que representan para el ser humano y por desarrollarse en gran medida en los territorios orográficamente más amables para éste. Su estado de amenaza es alarmante.

La necesidad de redefinir con urgencia la relación del hombre con los sistemas fluviales ha llevado al impulso de convenios internaciones (Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica de las Naciones Unidas, la Convención de RAMSAR, etc.) y, en lo que concierne al contexto europeo, al desarrollo y aprobación de la Directiva Marco del Agua. En este escenario se han iniciado una intensa actividad gubernamental y científica dirigida a estudiarlos y a revisar las políticas de planificación y gestión ecohidrológica.

Por otro lado, es conocido que los ecosistemas fluviales son altamente plásticos y dinámicos y que poseen una gran resiliencia ecológica, es decir, una singular capacidad de autorecuperación tras sufrir perturbaciones que los desestructuren o empobrezcan. Es por ello que los nuevos modelos de planificación fluvial deben de ir dirigidos prioritariamente a prevenir los impactos que puedan degradar nuestros ríos y zonas húmedas, y a reducir las actuales presiones sobre estos, lo que permitirá la naturalización de los procesos que los modelan y de su estado ecológico.

Debe dejarse por lo tanto que actúen las dinámicas y procesos naturales y que sean estos quienes reorganicen y renaturalicen el sistema (principio de restauración pasiva), evitándose actuaciones interventivas de restauración que dirijan el ecosistema hacia escenarios preconcebidos. No obstante, hay situaciones en que la degradación de los ecosistemas ha alcanzado niveles tan elevados que el ecosistema ha perdido su capacidad de regeneración, y casos en que el tiempo necesario para la recuperación es desproporcionalmente elevado. En tales circunstancias es cuando deben de ser aplicadas medidas de restauración fluvial que permitan corregir aspectos estructurales o guiar funciones  o procesos mediante técnicas concretas.

Incluso en los casos en que deban de ser aplicadas medidas de restauración fluvial (ingenieriles), estas deben de ser minimizadas, procurando que se limiten a acompañar simplemente el ecosistema hacia escenarios en que la resiliencia ecológica pueda actuar de nuevo (principio de mínima intervención). Es cierto por lo tanto que las intervenciones de restauración fluvial deben de reservarse para aquellos casos de mayor degradación ecológica en que se encuentre justificada su aplicación, pero también es cierto que se trata de una disciplina compleja y apasionante que debe de abordar algunas de los retos de mayor interés científico en el campo del conocimiento y la  planificación de nuestros sistemas acuáticos y riparios. La restauración fluvial debe de basarse en un profundo conocimiento de las diferentes ciencias que se ocupan de descifrar el complejo ecosistema fluvial (hidrología e hidráulica, morfodinámica, hidrogeología, geomorfología, biología, ecología, etc.).

MN Consultores ha acumulado durante los últimos años una amplia experiencia en materia de restauración fluvial, habiendo intervenido en algunos de los casos de mayor complejidad e interés técnico y científico en este campo de la ingeniería ambiental.

Somos consciente de la importancia de difundir dicha experiencia entre la comunidad de científicos y especialistas, pero creemos también en la obligación de acercar a la sociedad las problemáticas a las que se enfrentan nuestros ecosistemas fluviales y hacerla partícipe y sensibilizarla respecto a la necesidad de restaurarlos, dando a conocer los singulares retos a los que nos afrontamos en esta materia.

En coherencia con nuestro compromiso social corporativo, MN impulsa en la actualidad diversos proyectos audiovisuales con objetivos desiguales. Por una parte será elaborado un audiovisual, dirigido a especialistas, en el que se difundan experiencias pioneras en materia de restauración geomorfológica en las que han sido llevados a la práctica principios y paradigmas ecológicos teóricos propuestos por la moderna ecología fluvial, pero apenas ensayados a día de hoy. Por otro lado se producirá un documental -no técnico- que acercará los retos de la conservación y la restauración de los ecosistemas fluviales al gran público.

MN is close to local initiatives for appreciation of landscape and heritage. In this regard, MN works with the association Prioritat, which aim of is to build the nomination "Priorat-Montsant-Siurana" to the distinction as World Cultural Heritage, awarded by UNESCO.

The outstanding universal value, authenticity and integrity of this mediterranean mountain agricultural landscape are key elements that must be explained, argued and demonstrated in the so called application dossier. MN contribution to this project focuses on supporting the drafting of specific chapters of the above mentioned dossier, in which our company collaborates with expert staff and a complete document collection. MN supports nomination by interpreting Priorat’s natural heritage and the relationships between landscape, ecosystems and biodiversity.

Currently, the Priorat-Montsant-Siurana nomination is included in the spanish tentative list, a prerequisite for evaluation by the competent bodies.

As part of its corporate commitment to the conservation of Iberian landscapes and ecosystems, MN has promoted and funded over the past two years several actions aimed to the study, appreciation and territorial protection of the last dryland farming landscapes in upland littoral Catalonia: the agro-ecosystems of the Alt Camp region.

The driven strategy has been coordinated with various local administrations and institutions, to whom MN has also provided with technical support. It is a movement that brings together numerous companies, mainly from both the primary and tertiary sectors, whose action and personality is closely linked to these landscapes, as well as government institutions and cultural and environmental associations, which should culminate eventually in creating an organization for the protection and management of landscapes associated to dryland crops of the region. It also meets a large part of civil society, represented by 10 municipalities.

The process starts during the year 2013, when several meetings between representatives of MN Consultants, employers (growers, wineries, cooperatives, farmers, rural tourism accommodation, etc.), mayors, and other groups and members of the civil society concerned about the future of landscape and natural values ??(biological richness, productivity) of the cultured plains of the region. Such concerns stem from the finding that the model of socioeconomic and urban development -and also the involved planning tools - do not manage th territory accordingly with the significance of the landscape or the cultural and biological values that it holds. These are models far from the respect for these matters, which do not provide or encourage the development of the economic potential of the region through their productive (agricultural) and intangible  (touristic, residential, etc.)  values.

The social process takes shape and is formalized with the creation of a manifesto, which is subscribed by all involved actors and join other entities and companies in an event that takes place in the Chamber of Commerce of Valls. It brings more than 50 cooperatives and companies from the primary and tertiary sectors, political representatives and a large number of associations and other representatives of civil society. In the above mentioned manifesto he agreed to move to the superior administrations the urgent need to recognize the values ??and resources of the region and to act according to these. In addition, it collected the consensus for creating a partnership or consortium (or similar legal entity) that brings together all the actors and civil society mobilized. The main purpose of this would be to ensure the protection and management of the landscape and its natural and cultural heritage, ensure respect, enhance regional identity and promote a model of economic development related and consistent with those values.

Dryland crop plains of Alt Camp occupy a territory shared between 11 municipalities (Figuerola del Camp, Cabra del Camp, El Pla de Santa Maria, Valls, Aiguamúrcia, Vila-rodona, Alió, Bràfim, Puigpelat, Vilabella and Nulles ), ten of which are already involved in this territorial mobilization. January 2014 the mayors of these municipalities presented a declaration by which they agreed to promote a new entity to ensure a unique treatment for dryland farming landscapes.
