Se encuentra en plena producción en Cataluña un documental que plantea el reto de la lucha contra la pérdida de la riqueza biológica en el siglo XXI a partir de la problemática de un pequeño insecto, endémico del sur de Cataluña, y que se está convirtiendo en un icono de la conservación: “la somereta de Montsant”.

El proyecto cinematográfico está siendo producido MN Consultores y Bioscicat, y cuenta con la participación de Eduardo Punset y la colaboración de su fundación (Fundación Eduardo Punset), el Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Barcelona y del Parque Natural de Montsant.

Se trata de una producción que aborda una problemática universal desde un caso local y concreto, apelando a la conocida máxima “piensa globalmente, actúa localmente”.

Su objetivo principal es el de acercar el problema que comporta la amenaza de la pérdida de nuestra riqueza biológica al gran público. Por ello se ha planteado desde una aproximación cinematográfica mediante la fusión de diversos géneros (histórico, biográfico, ficción, etc.) y se ha contado con la participación desinteresada de Eduardo Punset, el comunicador científico probablemente más autorizado y popular de los últimos años, de quien el documental incorpora elementos biográficos de su infancia, que transcurrió en su mayor parte en un pueblo del Priorat al pie de la sierra del Montsant.

A lo largo del documental Punset desarrolla los argumentos científicos que nos obligan como sociedad a actuar con urgencia ante la actual crisis biológica, pero apela a las motivaciones emocionales como el verdadero elemento movilizador que puede llevarnos individual y colectivamente a replantear nuestras relaciones con la naturaleza.

El film reivindica la importancia de todas las especies biológicas por pequeñas y desconocidas que puedan ser, motivo por el cual se basa en la historia de la “somereta de Montsant”, una pequeña criatura descubierta a finales del siglo XIX y que se creía extinta. Su historia, y su paralelismo con la de Longinos Navás, el jesuita que fuera su descubridor y que cayó también en el olvido pese a ser uno de los entomólogos más sobresalientes de su tiempo en Europa, sirven para poner de relieve los valores de las ciencias de la vida.

The LIFE Bonelli project ends after five years of working for the recovery of Bonelli's eagle populations in the Iberian Peninsula.

The project allowed the recovery of several breeding pairs of the specie in areas where it had disappeared as Mallorca or Navarre, as well as increasing the breeding population in others regions such as Madrid or Castilla-La Mancha. It has also allow to advance in the knowledge of several aspects related to the conservation and ecology of this endangered Mediterranean eagle, such as the breeding of chickens in captivity, habitat management, and detection and understanding of patterns of use of dispersal zones.

The final seminar of the project will be held in Sangüesa (Navarra) from 20 to 22 September, where all the effort done, the achievements, and the knowledge acquired will be presented, in a meeting of experts from different regions of Europe to discuss the conservation of the specie. MN Consultants will present the communication "Biotic factors restringing the creation of new territories of eagle of Bonelli (Aquila fasciata) in the Iberian Peninsula". The paper analyzes the main factors related to habitats as limiting for the formation of new territories (land uses, abundance of prey species and competing species). It includes analysis regarding golden eagles’ influence in the demography of Bonelli's populations and the interactions between both species.

LIFE Bonelli is a project funded by the European Commission and several other partners: the Andalusian Regional Government, the Community of Madrid Government, the Diputación Foral de Álava, GANASA (Government of Navarra), GREFA, COFIB (Government of the Balearic Islands) and the French NGO Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO / BirdLife France).

MN experimentally assess the methodology for hydrogeomorphological characterization which must be further applied to the Spanish basins

The execution of works of the project to restore the rivers and Ucero and Abión between El Burgo de Osma and the Lobos River Canyon, in Soria province, is complete. This is one of the major projects that have been promoted by the Spanish Government under the Environment Promotion Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (Adapta PIMA).

The project tries, in a demonstrative way, measures that allow the restoration of river ecosystems, focused to increase their ecological resilience and enhance their adaptation to climate change in the region. It has been promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment of Spain, executed by the public company TRAGSA and coordinated by the Duero River Basin Confederacy.

This assay has involved an hydrogeomorphological analysis of more than 36 km of river reaches influenced by the project, which has been developed by MN Consultants, commissioned by the Ministry. It includes several studies on an experimental basis, since they allowed both to apply and evaluate for the first time the methodology for hydrogeomorphological characterization which must be implemented in all intercomunitary Spanish basins in the future as stated by the EU Water Framework Directive (Dir / 60/2000).

To mark the conclusion of the works, the area has been visited by the Secretary of State for the Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Pablo Saavedra, accompanied, among other authorities, by the Government Delegate in Castilla y Leon, María José Salgueiro; the Government Subdelegate in Soria, José María Heredia de Miguel; and the Water General Director of the Ministry, Liana Ardiles.

The practice of climbing in either conventional or via ferrata paths can affect geology and wildlife. Concerning the biodiversity, the main impacts may occur on some species of rupicolous flora and fauna.

Since 2006 Montsant Natural Park has a regulation of climbing practices based on both the location of known raptor nesting points and the species that use each of them, which divides climbing zones in free, conditioned or forbidden for these practices.

In order to update the information available in those management areas, and if necessary set changes in the current regulation, MN Consultors performed the 2015 census of the rupicolous raptor species nesting or maintaining active ranges in areas where climbing is allowed.

The study focuses especially on both detection (photo characterization) and mapping areas of primary use, nests and nesting platforms.

The results include the detection of up to eight bird species nesting in the same climbing area, so as the Griffon vulture Gyps fulvus, breeding recently in Priorat, and the Egyptian vulture Neophron percnopterus nesting in the natural park for the first time. They also show an important breeding failure of these scavenging species, while the Peregrine falcon Falco peregrinus or the Common kestrel Falco tinnunculus seem to have fewer problems and show a high breeding success in quite crowded areas. Other breeding species of interest detected in climbing areas are the Black wheatear Oenanthe leucura, the Rock dove Columba livia, the Common raven Corvus corax and the Blue rock thrush Monticola solitarius.
